The Key Players in the RTB Ecosystem

Real-Time Bidding connects multiple parties in the digital advertising ecosystem. Understanding who participates and what role each plays helps clarify how programmatic advertising works in practice.

Publishers (Sellers)

Publishers are website or app owners who have ad inventory to monetise. They make their available ad slots accessible to the RTB marketplace through a Supply-Side Platform (SSP) or ad exchange. Examples include news sites, entertainment portals, mobile apps, and adult content platforms. Publishers benefit from RTB because every available impression is auctioned to the highest bidder, maximising their revenue.

Advertisers (Buyers)

Advertisers want to reach specific audiences with their ads. They participate in RTB auctions through a Demand-Side Platform (DSP), which allows them to set targeting criteria and bid automatically on impressions that match their audience profile. Advertisers benefit because they only pay for impressions that meet their targeting requirements, rather than buying broad, untargeted inventory.

Ad Networks

Ad networks aggregate publisher inventory and sell it to advertisers, often with their own targeting and optimisation capabilities. Some ad networks — like TwinRed — also operate as ad exchanges, offering both managed network campaigns and programmatic RTB access.

DSPs (Demand-Side Platforms)

DSPs are technology platforms that allow advertisers and agencies to manage multiple ad campaigns and bid in RTB auctions across many exchanges simultaneously. They use data and algorithms to evaluate bid requests and determine optimal bids in real time.

SSPs (Supply-Side Platforms)

SSPs help publishers manage their ad inventory and connect to multiple ad exchanges and DSPs. They run the auction logic and ensure publishers receive the highest possible price for each impression.

Ad Exchanges

Ad exchanges are the digital marketplaces where RTB auctions take place. They connect SSPs (representing publishers) with DSPs (representing advertisers) and run the real-time auction mechanism. TwinRed operates as an ad exchange for the adult/dating traffic vertical.

Data Providers (DMPs)

Data Management Platforms (DMPs) aggregate anonymised audience data from various sources and provide it to advertisers and DSPs to improve targeting accuracy. This data might include interests, demographics, and online behaviour patterns.
